This Is What to Say to Someone Who Lost a Loved One

In the United States, about 2.5 million people die each year, and they leave behind an average of five grieving people.

Chances are that you probably know someone who is grieving the loss of a life. If you do know someone, it can be difficult to know what to say to someone who lost a loved one.

Thankfully, there are some things you can do (and say) that can possibly help them feel a little bit better.

Offer Comfort

If you can’t find the right words to say, try offering comfort instead.

The person who is grieving may not even feel like talking anyway, and simply just being there for them and offering support can be enough.

You can offer your support by attending the funeral, bringing them dinners, or even just being there while they vent and talk.

Find the Right Words

If you still aren’t sure what to say to someone when someone dies, you could try a few of these common phrases.

  • I’m so sorry for your loss. I’m always here if you need someone to talk to.
  • He/she brought so much joy to the others around them. They were surely a great person and will be missed by many people.
  • I wish I could help you with the pain you’re feeling.
  • I’m thinking about you and praying for you.
  • He/she was such a good person. But their legacy will live on and always be with you.
  • We had so many good memories with him/her.

When in doubt, put yourself in their shoes. What would you want someone to say to you?

Don’t Use the Wrong Words

While there is no one right thing to say, there are a few things you should never say.

Don’t say things like:

  • Well, they’re in a better place now.
  • They did this to themselves.
  • Well, everything happens for a reason.
  • I know how you feel, I lost my loved one too.
  • Just be strong.
  • It was their time to go.
  • At least he/she lived a long life.

These aren’t comforting words at all, and they may end up making the person feel guilty or even worse than they were feeling before.

Buy Them a Gift

Sometimes words can’t say everything that you’re feeling, and a gift can say it better.

There are plenty of sympathy gift ideas out there that will let you say you’re sorry for their pain. Depending on what you get them, it could also be something to help minimize their pain and bring them comfort during a difficult time.
