Virgin, one of the most popular telecom companies in the world looks to reduce the cost of network rollout as Virgin Media has announced that it is bringing 1Gb broadband to a village in Cambridgeshire. By this way, it seems they could reduce the cost by a third if this would be implemented.
Virgin Media had earlier announced on Tuesday that it is testing a new network rollout method called “narrow-trenching” in the village of Papworth. According to the network,
this “reduces the width of the trench used to lay fibre cables from around 40cm to just 10cm and enables engineers to cover up to 100m in a day, making it more than twice as fast as current methods”.
But what is more is that these Papworth residents are set to benefit from Virgin Media’s latest trial, since the ISP shall be delivering 1Gb broadband to 100 households in the area. And to add on that, “hundreds” more households in the village will now have access to Virgin Media’s 152Mb broadband service. Truth be told, this shall be a great way of connecting households in UK to the internet.
As a statement, Virgin Media’s chief Customer, Networks and Technology officer Paul Buttery said earlier today that, “Virgin Media continues to push the boundaries of broadband, launching the UK’s first superfast service in 2008 and boosting Virgin Media homes yet again with 152Mb broadband launched this year.
“We know our network is unbeatable and we are excited to bring 1Gb to the people of Papworth as they help us explore a new way of rolling out our network faster and more cost-effectively.”
And to add on that, the head of local infrastructure and Street management for the Cambridgeshire County council Nicola Debnam, added, “Cambridgeshire County Council welcomes the commercial provision of fibre broadband and supports new innovation in bringing broadband services to the county.
“This complements our Connecting Cambridgeshire partnership programme to improve the county’s digital infrastructure to drive economic growth and ensure businesses, residents and public services can make the most of opportunities offered by the digital age.”
