It is time for some Football news and no, it isn’t related to the FIFA world cup 2014 but instead it has to do with the rules of Champion League. If you’ve watched the UEFA Champions League Final this year, you may recall that Xabi Alonso missed the finals because of receiving a yellow card on the semi final stage of the competition and had joined the likes of Paul Scholes and Roy Keane to be the latest victim of such incidents.
Well, that may no longer be the case anymore as in a statement posted on UEFA’s official website, it read, “Following a recommendation by the UEFA Club Competitions Committee – in order to implement in UEFA club competitions a rule which is already in force in the UEFA European Football Championship – the Emergency Panel decided that, as of this season, all yellow cards from the beginning of the group stage will expire on completion of the quarter-finals. Bookings will therefore not be carried forward to the semi-finals.”
But perhaps Alonso won’t be too happy with the news as he will still be unavailable to play in Real Madrid’s UEFA Super Cup tie against Sevilla due to his ban for his celebration on the pitch during the Champions League final last season.
