To take great photos, you need an excellent camera, of course. But that’s not all you need! Some of the latest and greatest cameras and lenses debut at CES and elsewhere each year, but the new accessory releases are just as important. From triggers and printers to lighting rigs, straps, and cases, accessories tend to place second in tech headlines even though shutterbugs at every level from amateur to pro know they can make or break a shoot.
It’s clearly important to know what’s out there, whether you’re snapping pics of your kids or taking professional portraits of other people’s kids. Here’s what’s new in the photography world for 2016:
Yongnuo’s YN360 LED Light Wand
This budget-friendly handheld lighting solution uses 40 RGB colored lamps, so your subjects are lit perfectly for less. Each wand’s rechargeable lithium-ion battery will work for two hours in standard mode at full power or for a whopping four hours in RGB mode at maximum brightness.
Nikon’s SB-5000 Flash
Speaking of lighting, Nikon’s brand new Speedlight comes with features like a unique flash cooling system that gives you 100 consecutive shots at full output, built-in radio triggers, and TTL metering at a distance.
Adobe Bridge CC 6.2
Bridge is companion software for Photoshop that lets you organize and browse files quickly before editing. This latest version has been updated for speed – a real asset if you’re trying to flip through thousands of photos before you edit.
iPhone Lenses from Zeiss
Lens Master Zeiss worked with Explolenses to release this new line of pro-level external lenses for the iPhone. If you’re comfortable with the price tag, this amazing add-on can level up your photo phone game but if you’re using an Android phone sporting Snapdragon (best mobile processor for graphics), try Photojojo’s smartphone lenses instead.
Goal Zero Venture 70
This is one of the very few portable chargers on the market that can handle juicing up a full-size camera. Goal Zero’s Venture 70 power pack can charge any camera that uses USB charging to full power in the field – up to seven times.
Skooba’s Cable Stable
Tangled cables, scratched lenses and missing memory cards are a thing of the past when you stash your gear in Skooba’s zip up case. Inner and outer pockets plus multiple straps keep your gear contained on the road.
This is the newest wireless dye sub portable printer to come out of Canon and by far the fastest. Updates to the ultra compact Selphy have also improved battery life significantly – you can get 54 prints on a single charge, so it’s a great choice for events.
Whenever you’re shopping for new camera accessories, let your goals be your guide. Are you hoping to turn your smartphone into your primary device? The DxO ONE is like an upgrade for your phone’s built-in camera. Do you want to take your adventure photography to the next level? Then stash everything you need in UltraLight Camera bags from MindShift Gear.
A little research is all it takes to create a fantastic setup. No matter what you want to achieve, you can be sure there’s gear out there to help you make it happen.
