You might have heard about the god particle. A couple of years back in 2012, there had been a major discovery in the field of science and technology and this was the discovery of the long before predicted particle, which would help to understand many phenomenon in the universe such answering very simple questions like “Why do I have mass? Why doesn’t space have any mass?”
This particle is the Higgs Boson particle which has been discovered in the CERN labs. If you know your physics then this particle had been the missing puzzle to many vital answers of the questions that curiosity poses towards us.
But Higgs Boson, like every other person does have a darker side to itself, a side which we wouldn’t want to face anytime in our entire lives and hope our future generations doesn’t have to either. The particle that had answered many questions regarding the origin of universe, could also become an actor playing a pivotal role behind the destruction of universe as well.
And this has been suggested by none other than Stephen Hawking, who is one of the greatest minds of this century and shall perhaps become one of the major minds in the history of mankind. His publishings has always changed the way we look at universe but this time, it isn’t a good news.
So what exactly does Mr. Hawking have to say about this elusive ‘god particle’? Well, according to Mr. Hawking who is currently aged 72 years old (and yet as a brain, much better than any) at very high energy levels the Higgs boson, which as mentioned before gives shape size and mass to everything that exists, could become unstable.
Now any particle becoming unstable isn’t a news that’ll pose relief to physicists of our world, let alone the god particle. This, he said, could cause a “catastrophic vacuum decay” that would lead space and time to collapse.
“The Higgs potential has the worrisome feature that it might become megastable at energies above 100bn giga-electron-volts (GeV),” Hawking wrote in the preface to a new book called Starmus.
“This could mean that the universe could undergo catastrophic vacuum decay, with a bubble of the true vacuum expanding at the speed of light. “This could happen at any time and we wouldn’t see it coming,” said Mr. Hawking.
However, according to Mr. Stephen Hawking, the probability of the occurrence of any such event could be minimal and many might argue that its less probability makes it an unlikely event in the earth (or in the world for that matter). However, as Mr. Hawking had warned before, its catastrophic nature shouldn’t be taken lightly and one should start seriously preparing for it and ensure such an event doesn’t occur in earth as it would call the death of universe.
That being said, we don’t know if such an event could be man made but it does seem that there isn’t any reason why such an event couldn’t happen in the surface of earth.
